"Having previously completed the London Marathon, a 138-mile Coast to Coast Bike Ride, and Mount Everest Base Camp Trek. I was looking for my next big challenge, and then I discovered Triathlon. I took to it straight away, as it brought together some of challenges I had previously participated in. From being young I have always enjoyed Swimming, Cycling and Running and Triathlon brings them altogether providing the physical challenge I look for when exercising."
"Having participated in the London Marathon in aid of MENCAP, I feel I understand the true nature of Individual Disciplines vs Team Sports. The marathon was a huge step away from the team sports I have always played part in, such as, football and cricket. When the idea of being part of a ‘relay-triathlon’ team came about, this really appealed to me."
"Coming from a family who have always worked so closely together, I love the idea passing on the philosophy of being a tight knit team, with a healthy and competitive spirt throughout our businesses and also the message of our employees keeping fit and healthy is of massive importance for so many reasons. I cannot wait for the event, bring it on!!!"
"Despite always being healthy and active, this will be my first endurance event and is a very exciting challenge. I have always preferred team sports like football and basketball to keep fit. I think this will be a good introduction to these sorts of events by being part of a ‘relay-triathlon’ team."
"Our biggest strength, is the family values at the heart of our businesses. We really value all our employees, as they are integral to our success. Competing in this event and the training leading up to it, allows us to spend time out of the office in a positive way as well as looking out for everyone’s wellbeing. Also, there is nothing like a bit of healthy competition."
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
As employers we take our responsibility for our staff’s health and wellbeing very seriously. We realised, if we can encourage an active and healthy lifestyle and make this a key part of our values and culture; our team will be happier, healthier, more productive and less likely to be off work through illness.
As a way of getting our staff active we came up with the idea of a Triathlon in a relay format ‘Relathlon’; this will be done as a part of a Team of 3. A member of each of the team will compete in either the Swim, Bike, or Run, making it a perfect format for beginners.
With a combined workforce of 30, we were surprised and pleased by the enthusiasm shown by the team in wanting to take part in an event like this. So, we decided to offer the opportunity for other local businesses to get involved and enable them to enter as many teams as they have willing participants. This is how ‘Get Companies Active’ was born.
As well as helping our staff get active and healthy, we think ‘Get Companies Active’ will bring other rewards such as team building for both the main event and the training camps leading up to the event, as well as networking opportunities with other local businesses.
As there are 3 disciplines in Triathlon, we thought it would be great to raise money for 3 local charities; a charity for each discipline. The 3 charities we have chosen are long-established in the community and most people have some affiliation or another with them.
‘Get Companies Active’ aims to get local people active through multi-discipline sport, raising money for charity, whilst offering team building opportunities and a fun day.
